The Ridiculous Race, Part I: Alaska, Cuba, and Dirty Hot Tubs

ep. 108-ridiculous-race-cover

By their own admission, Steve Hely and Vali Chandrasekaran were goofy and immature 25-year-olds.

And so like most goofy and immature 25-year-olds, they would come up with crazy ideas while drinking beer in an apartment complex hot tub.

Unlike most goofy and immature 25-year-olds, however, they eventually acted upon one of their crazy ideas.

And thus, The Ridiculous Race was born!

Today, they join me to discuss not only the “rules” of The Ridiculous Race but also the incredible way that they were able to score a book deal from a major publisher before The Race ever started.

Being comedy writers for some of the biggest shows on television (including Modern Family), Steve and Vali not only have a wealth of funny travel stories but are just downright funny.

The Lost City of Z with David Grann

Ep 103 Lost-City

The legendary city of “El Dorado”, the ultimate discovery. Percy Fawcett, a renowned explorer of his time, set out on his search for the “Lost City of Z” as he had nicknamed it. After barely surviving several exploratory expeditions he tried once more in the mid 1920s.

And was never seen again.

“The Lost City of Z: A Tale of Deadly Obsession in the Amazon” by David Grann sheds some light on what happened to this legendary explorer, and is one of my favorite books about travel.

In Part II of my interview with David Grann, we delve into the adventures that made up the book and some of the trials and tribulations he encountered while trying to track down this lost explorer around the globe and into the depths of the Amazon.

David’s story is fascinating on so many levels, and truly inspires the adventurer in all of us.

This is part two of a two part interview. Click here for part I.

A Journalist in Search of a Giant Squid with David Grann

Ep 102 - David Grann

He’s the first to say it, he’s no adventurer.

And yet somehow he’s found himself tracking down Giant Squid in the middle of the night during a hurricane on the ocean and trekking through the wilds of the Amazon in search of a legendary explorer who went missing in the 1920s.

The author of The Lost City of Z (one of my favorite books) and The Devil and Sherlock Holmes, David Grann.

Today he joins us to talk about how he got his start as a journalist and how he’s experienced some crazy adventures in pursuit of his stories.

Because even if you’re not looking for adventure, sometimes it comes looking for you.

This is part one of a two-part interview. Check back tomorrow for part II.

From Couch Potato to Adventurer

Ep-100-Dave-Cornthwaite

No matter how many times I try, I just can’t get them to admit it.

We’ve had adventurers on before, and I always ask the same question.

So, you’re a superhuman right?

Turns out none of them will admit to it.

They just keep telling they’re regular Joes.

Or in Dave’s case, a couch potato.

Dave Cornthwaithe joins me today to talk about his Expedition 1000 project – 25 journeys of 1000 miles each. All made on manpower alone.

Skateboard, kayak, bicycles, and more; if Dave can make it go, then it’s going.

We discuss moving from an unfulfilled life to one full of joy and spontaneity, how to deal with the people who are critical of these choices and living life to the fullest.

This is part one of a two-part interview with Dave Cornwaithe. Be sure to check in tomorrow for the rest!
