From Couch Potato to Adventurer

Ep-100-Dave-Cornthwaite

No matter how many times I try, I just can’t get them to admit it.

We’ve had adventurers on before, and I always ask the same question.

So, you’re a superhuman right?

Turns out none of them will admit to it.

They just keep telling they’re regular Joes.

Or in Dave’s case, a couch potato.

Dave Cornthwaithe joins me today to talk about his Expedition 1000 project – 25 journeys of 1000 miles each. All made on manpower alone.

Skateboard, kayak, bicycles, and more; if Dave can make it go, then it’s going.

We discuss moving from an unfulfilled life to one full of joy and spontaneity, how to deal with the people who are critical of these choices and living life to the fullest.

This is part one of a two-part interview with Dave Cornwaithe. Be sure to check in tomorrow for the rest!

Reinventing Travel with Bruce Poon Tip

Bruce-Poon-Tip-WEB

Have you ever wanted the backpacker experience but more organized, and with, perhaps, better accommodation?

Bruce did, and he figured there had to be other people like him out there.

So he started a tour company for them.

Bruce Poon Tip, the found of G Adventures, joins us today to talk about the evolution of the travel business, how exporting tourism works, where your dollars do the most good, and why group travel is really awesome.

Bruce started G-Adventures in the early nineties and has since grown it into a company that runs over 15,000 tours a year with 2,000 employees worldwide. He shares some great business advice for those of us who are entrepreneurs and lays out what it takes to run such a huge company.

Bruce has some great insights about what it is that causes companies to stagnate and how to get out of that rut, along with some advice on having a strong purpose for your business.

We also chat a lot about how travel changes you, why you’re never “done” with a country, and a crazy story of travel mishap (it involves tear gas, helicopters, and exercise, you won’t want to miss it!).

What are some of your best experiences from finding a group while traveling? Either while you were on a group tour, or just hanging out with people you met along your journey.

EPoP 051: The Incredible Quest with Akshay Nanavati

Akshay-Nanavati

The other side of fear leads us to the most exciting and memorable moments in our lives.

After hearing Akshay Nanavati speak onstage at the World Domination Summit 2014 for just a couple of minutes, I knew I had to find a way to get him on the podcast.

Luckily enough I ran into him shortly afterward in the men’s restroom, and despite the unorthodox location of the request, he agreed to come on as a guest.

This week Akshay joins us to continue our theme of adventure in travel by sharing his awesome lifelong quest.

It’s one of the most amazing ones I’ve ever heard in my life, and so crazy that you’ll just have to listen to find out what it is!

We discuss how fear affects our travels, the logistics of his great adventure, the parts that seem the most exciting, and of course those that are the scariest.

We also talk about how Akshay deals with people who hate on his quest and the benefits of traveling with local companies and how it can save you a ton of money!

What’s one terrifying thing you’ve done that leads to a great experience or memory?
