Heather and I discuss why we have (almost) no plans for our upcoming road trip, how you can help pick where we go and what we do, what our essential items are, and why this is getting back to our travel roots.
We really want your suggestions! Know a brewery we should stop at? Places we should eat? Places we should hike? Are you nearby?
Let us know!
We want to meet you!

For some reason, I am having trouble listening to this podcast because the bar with the play button, length of podcast, etc. is missing. I thought maybe it was just my computer but the other podcast pages still work. It still could just be me but you might want to look into it just in case. I look forward to hearing this one eventually though!
@Alexandre koeneke- Weird, not sure how that happened but I’ve re-uploaded it and it seems to work now. Check it out, and sorry!
Don’t be sorry – I appreciate it! Thanks :)
I loved this episode! We just finished up a six week road trip that was supposed to conclude with Nashville, Memphis, & Asheville — but we didn’t make it that far because we spent too much time in Arizona and New Mexico. So I hope you do a podcast after your trip so I can live vicariously through you.
I would definitely recommend going to New Orleans — it’s SUCH a fun city. And this is a great time to go, too — it SHOULDN’T be too hot yet.
For a return route, have you thought about coming back through Savannah & Charleston? We had some of the best ice cream we’ve ever had in Savannah (Leopold’s Ice Cream) and for a fun twist on the winery/brewery experience, you have to do a mead tasting at Savannah Bee Company.
@Rebecca- Glad you loved it – we thought it’d be a fun one to record, especially since we have no real idea where we are going!
Yeah, I can see how you would get stuck in AZ and NM – great places. I always want to spend more time in a place…but I think that’s a good thing. And looks like New Orleans will def be on the list.
We actually have thought about coming back up 95 and doing Savannah/Charleston. I’ve never been to Charleston, but have been to Savannah a bunch and love it. We will see…playing it pretty fluid!
The weather really doesn’t like you guys for your trip, hopefully you guys headed down to New Orleans. 81 is pretty awesome at this time of year though with all the wild flowers blooming.
There are many hikes in this area. However, the flowers aren’t blooming as much right now higher up. My recommendation for 1 hike around Roanoke is Tinker Cliff on the AT via Andy Layne Trial. Less people than he popular MacAfees with all the views in the valley and outcrop of rocks to chill on at the top. I have some pics on my blog if you want to take a look. A good site with a good guide of a lot of the hikes around here is http://www.hikingupward.com/
If you are in the Roanoke area, the best brewery is by far Parkway Brewery. But we’ve got a lot of smaller breweries in town. The best bar/restaurant in town would be Lucky’s and their cocktails, but that’s my opinion. Other good breweries on 81 are Devil’s Backbone around Lexington VA and Blue Mountain on 64 toward Charlottesville VA.
@John – Thanks so much…yeah, the weather isn’t awful, but certainly not the best. We were bummed that most of the Blue Ridge Parkway wasn’t in bloom yet. I guess we hit it about 2-4 weeks too early?
We weren’t able to stop in Roanoke on the way down (burned through it on the way to Asheville) but might on the way back.
Yea, it’s hard to time the flowers higher up in elevation. I’ve been here for a few years and still have a hard time with it. I guess part of it is the later bloom and another is it’s generally more windy. My friend in the forestry department here at tech can probably explain it better.
The best season to drive the Blue Ridge Parkway is definitely the fall around early October.
PM me if you do decide to ever stop in Roanoke and want to some outdoor stuff or grab a beer.
@John – Certainly will do, and we will be back, for sure. Gotta time those flowers right…October, here we come!
Suggestions: Asheville – eat at 9 Mile and do dessert at The Chocolate Lounge. You’ll find all the breweries yourself but my favorite is The Green Man. Go to New Orleans – if for nothing else but the food! And I can recommend this blog, “Camels and Chocolate” about Nashville – the author lives there and she has several comprehensive posts about great places to eat and drink.Have fun!
@Jill – Great recs! We tried out Green Man – not my favorite (that was Wicked Weed) but definitely a good spot. And I’ll have to check out Camels and Chocolate – always looking for good places in Nashville. Thanks!
