Last week we shared our experiences getting jobs teaching English in Japan, and how those jobs worked.
But what about Japan itself?
During the 2 years we were there we traveled throughout the country and picked up on a lot of basic etiquette and cheap travel tips!
In today’s podcast, we share some of our best tips on etiquette (both general and food-related), the cheapest ways to travel around the country, the huge range of accommodation options, and of course, our favorite foods!
We even go into some specifics regarding train and air travel in Japan (budget airlines!) that you’re probably going to want to check out as you start planning your trip!
Which is right now. Right?

Thanks for the great podcast. We just returned from a ski trip in the Japanese Alps and this episode was super helpful!
@Carrick – Awesome, glad you liked it. One thing I never got to do when I was in Japan was go skiing…where’d you go, and how was it?
Hi Travis and Heather,
I’m heading to Japan this March and your episode was super helpful!
What is the name of the awesome Ryokan outside of Tokyo that you mentioned in this episode?
Thanks!
Maren
@Maren- They ryokan that we love that is in Izu Pennisula is called K’s House Ito Onsen. It’s a bit outside of Tokyo, probably about 1-2 hours, but it is awesome. If you are going that way any way, I’d highly recommend it!
Didn’t you mention a ryokan in Hiroshima you loved too? I think you said you would post the name in the episode notes?
@Laurel – Hmm…I don’t remember the ryokan we stayed at in Hiroshima. I do know there is a K’s house there, which is always a pretty decent option for budget travelers.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E7kor5nHtZQ Train Stuffing :) Was it ever this bad?
@Alexandra Koeneke- Never that bad, but it’s pretty tight, that’s for sure!
We enjoy your podcast and run it in the background while we work.
Here are a few bits of information for you.
How to stop a bow off-time your bow to bow at the same time.
Why you don’t stick your chop sticks in the bowl of rice-It’s done for deceased people at the alter.
@Andy- Thanks, glad you like it, and thanks for the tidbits and insight. Makes sense.
I used to live in Hawaii and they have a sushi chain restaurant with the conveyor belt. It’s called Genki Sushi!
@Christine- Just another reason to go there…we’ve never been (to Hawaii, that is).
