About the Show
Creating Insatiable Wanderlust Since 2013
Every Tuesday Trav and Heather fill your heart with wanderlust and your head with knowledge.
Sometimes we’ll interview amazing travelers, like the guy who went around France on a little red scooter or the guy who spent 5 years going to every country in Africa (and climbing the tallest peak in each). Sometimes we’ll give you practical advice, like our 47 best gifts for travelers or 21 ways to survive a long haul flight. Sometimes we’ll drop some lists on ya (we love lists!) like our top 10 ice cream in the world or our top 25 breweries. And sometimes we’ll tell you all the best things to do at a specific destination, like the best seafood in Croatia or where to eat pizza in Rome.
But we’ll always have fun, always get (probably too) excited, and always say the word boutique wrong.
Joining me today is someone who has lived, worked, and traveled in over 150 countries, who set a Guinness World Record on 3,700 km rail journey across China, and who, by the time you’re listening to this, will have embarked on a journey driving a solar-powered tuk-tuk across all of Australia, Julian O’Shea, founder of Unbound and SolarTuk.
Joining me today is someone whose work has graced the cover of National Geographic, who has sold over 150,000 copies of his guidebooks, and who claims to have the best job in the world (I may argue this point), James Kaiser, award-winning travel writer and photographer from JamesKaiser.com.
Today’s guest is someone who has been to more than 50 countries, who took a year-long round the world adventure in 2009, and who, during that entire time, kept a detailed and meticulous spreadsheet that any number loving nerd like myself would geek out on, Bryan Tighe, founder of BudgetYourTrip.com.
Today’s guest is former Frugal Traveler columnist for the New York Times and author of Rediscovering Travel: A Guide for the Globally Curious, Seth Kugel. Seth is also known in some circles as the “Latino food expert”, can claim that he has written for the New Yorker but can’t claim that his work has appeared in the New Yorker, and is one of the funniest guys out there (just read his about page!).
Joining me today is Lucas Peters, an award-winning writer and photographer, who has lived abroad in village on a mountain and then moved to one of the world’s most expensive cities, and who is pushing me (in a good way) to take Heather to Morocco more than anyone else on the planet – and who has literally written the book on that wonderful country, Moon Travel Guides: Morocco.
Mark Furness, an airline pilot, has been to all seven continents, became a qualified pilot at age 22, has flown over 2 million miles, which is the equivalent of 4 roundtrips to the moon, and is my guest on today’s episode. He is the man behind the Flying and Travel website where he gives tips on flying, great destinations, and how to become a pilot. He has some amazing insights into different locations that you have to check out because they will give you wanderlust like nothing else.
Each year there are always a handful of days that stand out. Some of those perfect travel days that you couldn’t have planned in a million years, but that really stick with you, months later. Today, Heather and I go through our top 16 experiences of 2018 spanning the globe from Budapest to British Columbia to the warmth of sunny Florida and Mallorca.
We love desserts, anything from ice cream to pastries, peppermint bark to doughnuts…it all tastes amazing. Today Heather and I go through our top 7 desserts (14 total plus 1b from Trav) from 2018, from hometown to widely available to cities around the world, if it’s delicious, it’s on the list!
2018 was a great year for beer! Listen to hear our best Beer experiences of 2018, Trav has cheated by having 8 while Heather has 7! Including a few that happened during the Old Bess adventures.
Heather’s favorite activities mean she’s in charge today! While she didn’t drink a lot of wine in 2018, there are still a couple of awesome spots to mention, and there were quite a few coffee shops visited along the last 12 months!
